 Significant Tornado Events: 1800 - 1900The Great Natchez Tornado - May 7, 1840This massive tornado hit Natchez, Mississippi, killing 317 people and injuring 109. At least 269 people were killed on boats on the Mississippi River.The Great Southern Tornado Outbreak - February 19, 1884Over 60 tornadoes swept the entire Southeast. At least 170 people were killed, possibly more. It was considered the largest outbreak until the Super Outbreak of April 3-4, 1974.The Louisville, Ky Outbreak - March 27, 1890At least 125 people were killed in Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky and 76 people alone were killed in the city of Louisville, Kentucky, 44 of those in one building.The Saint Louis Outbreak - May 27, 1896The outbreak in Missouri and Illinois devastated parts of St. Louis. Of the 305 killed, 255 were in and around St. Louis, Missouri. There were 1000 injuries and $10 million in damage in St. Louis alone.The New Richmond Tornado - June 12, 1899 A tornado struck New Richmond, Wisconsin, killing 114 people. Many of those that died were in town attending an outdoor circus.These are just some of the historical tornadoes that have devastated portions of the United States over the past years.
