Careers in Meteorology

Jim Cantore

"We want to inform our viewers about the potential impacts of severe weather events so they can protect their property and most importantly their lives. We don't want to become the story, but we do try our best to position ourselves close enough to the action so our viewers can see the impacts. What's nice is that we never have to hype the weather. It always speaks for itself".

Jim began his live field coverage reporting on Hurricane Andrew's second landfall in Louisiana. Since 1992, he has covered over 50 hurricanes and dozens of floods, tornadoes and winter storms. "They are all different and lessons can be learned from them all."

A native New Englander, Jim graduated with a B.S. in Meteorology from Lyndon State College in Vermont. Among many of the honors, Jim has received the NOAA's David Johnson Award for innovative use of Earth observation satellite imagery that set a trend in on-air presentations. When not reporting live from the field, Jim can be seen on Evening Edition each weeknight at 9pm ET on The Weather Channel.
